Free webcam based barcode-scanner component.

Posted in Flash by Chris Benjaminsen on the October 29th, 2006

So I finally decided to release my barcode-scanner component. I know a lot of you people have been waiting for this!

I have been holding this off, as there is a lot of cool potential in the technology which I really wanted to explore. So fare it has always looked as I would have the time to work on this “in a few months. I did however never get the time and I also realized that I never will with my plans for the future.

Therefore I have decided to give it away for free, so enjoy.

Ohh and if you build a social media indexing service where people can scan and categorize there media, give it points and get recommendations based on what other with same taste have voted… Send me a few cases of Cola, or Beer when you sell it to google for billions ;)

The scanner should be very easy to use, just read the readme.txt, and see the example

Download the component here:

Nice one. But doesnt seem to work properly. It would be great, if you could share the source-code. Thanks :).

Try adjusting your webcam’s zoom, sadly the component is not as forgiving as competitors products.

There used to be a trading card game that used barcodes to generate powerups etc… just a thought…

hi, Chris, nice program, thanks but I find there is a problem in some browsers if I run embedded file from barcodepedia.com:

On one machine it’s fine, but the other it locks up. I guess it has to be some cross site scripting problem (and tougher settings at the one machine).

So I thought I shold try to run it from my own site, as you share the source code, it should be peanuts, I thought. But first: How do I edit and compile the Barcode Scanner.swc file? What program to use?

And more: I am a complete noob in Flash, but how hard can it be, open, compile and voila? But then; why should that be neccessary, wouldn’t you just share the compiled version as well? So first: what program to use for editing? And second: what parameters do I have to set?
